With the change in lifestyle of people, they have moved more into entertainment, travel and family get-together. Accordingly demand of hotels have also increased. With the number of hotels increasing day by day, the requirement of hotel management professionals have also seen a boost. Due to improved salary structure and job profile, hotel industry is a respectable job industry now.
Hotel Industry is all about making people happy and taking care of their needs when they are out from their home. If you have the ability to engage with people and a passion towards guest, it can be great place for you.
To get into hotel industry, you have to clear the entrance exam of universities like Uttar Pradesh Technical Industry, Punjab Technical Industry or the best is Indian Hotel Management (IHM). There are lot of college and institute in almost every city in India which offers Hotel Management degree, diploma or crash courses. Most of these colleges are affiliated by one or the other institutes. Entrance exams are based on 10+2 syllabus and generally are easy to clear if you have a hold on basic general knowledge, English, math and computer. Try to get the admission in IHM colleges as these are economical in terms of Fee Structure and are best known in hotel industry. If you are a graduate from IHM college, chances are more for better job opportunities.
Eligibility to persue the career in Hotel Management:-
- Students who have completed their 10+2 are eligible for Degree course, diploma in hotel management.
- Students who have completed their graduation can get the admission in Post Graduation courses of Hotel Management.
In your 3 years or 4 years course, you will be educated on various aspects of hotel like Front Office, Housekeeping, Food and Beverage Production, Food and Beverage Service, Accounts, Reservation, Nutrition, Computer. Institutes will also focus on your overall development and will help to groom your personality better. English as a language will play a major role in your entire study time and will be a must when you try to get the job in the industry. Hence please focus on your language while you are studying and if you are not very comfortable with it, you can join an English speaking course.
The initial salary is in range of 15ooo rs. to 18000 rs. which can go up to 35000 rs. in 3-4 years of hard work. After graduation colleagues joins as associates and management trainee in departments of their choice and with the experience salary keep getting revised every year. Salary is no bar for a candidate who enjoys the life of a hotelier and salary can increase as per his abilities developed year on year.

- Guest Relations
- Front Office
- Food and Beverage Service
- Food and Beverage Production
Front Office/Guest Relations/Reservations: –
Employees working in these departments are the face of the hotel and handles the guests as first contact. Reception is a part of the hotel where every information is provided to guest regarding their booking for rooms, restaurants, Spa and so on. Reception and guest relations colleagues are responsible for better guest engagement and are key to a repeat business. while colleagues at reservations are taking care of room bookings of the guests and also deals with travel agents bookings. Colleagues at reservations also takes care of travel agents commission calculation and are empowered to take final calls while confirming the booking rates.
Employees working in housekeeping are the custodian of the hotel’s overall face. They are the one who takes care about the entire hotel’s cleanness part. Generally the team is divided into 2 parts – Guest room cleaning and public area cleaning. Guest room cleaning team focuses on guest rooms and provide daily cleaning service in occupied rooms. Team also makes the room after every guest departure and turn around the room for new arrival guest. Public area team is responsible for the other areas of hotel cleaning like restaurants, spa, gardening, lobby etc. Depending upon the size of the hotel the job areas may increase or decrease.
Food and Beverage Production:-
After the rooms and hotel structure, food is the main highlight of the hotel. Team F&B Production (also known as Kitchen team) ensures that every guest who visit the hotel, remembers the taste of their hands. The team consist of Chefs of different cuisines like North Indian, South Indian, Chinese, Italian, Tandoor etc. These chefs are specialized in their jobs and can make the mouth watering tasty food in their own area of expertise.
Food and Beverage Service:-
While it is important to have a delicious food available for guests, it is also important that colleagues who serves the food are best in their job. Team F&B Service takes the responsibility of the same. Colleagues working in this team are aware about the food taste, menu options and their serving style. they are also expert in public relations with the guests and know how to make them happy. Hotel generally have multiple food outlets, bars etc and there is different service team for different outlets which knows the unique serving style of their outlet.
Colleagues working in account team keeps a track of day to day transactions happening at the hotel, keeping records of revenues, Travel agents commissions etc.
This particular team does the advertisement and publicity of the hotel and a definite reason for new people getting attracted towards the individual hotel.
While marketing team ensures that there are enough people aware about the hotel and get query for hotel services, sales team ensures to convert those queries into business. offering attractive deals are a key strategy used by sales team to convert the business.
